For millions of Americans, anxiety is a part of everyday life. But it doesn’t have to be.
Anxiety is a persistent worry or fear about everyday situations. Anxiety can be intense, and oftentimes impacts your ability to function normally and enjoy life.
Anxiety, as it occurs naturally in the body, can be a motivator. It can motivate us to study for a test. It can spur us on to avoid procrastination. However, in unhealthy doses, anxiety can not only become a hindrance on day-to-day tasks, but can become a debilitating disorder.
Anxiety becomes a disorder when it inhibits our physical and emotional growth. It can feel excessive and consuming. This is often the sign of other underlying issues that we must seek to resolve.
How do I know if I am suffering from anxiety?
Looking for signs and symptoms can help identify unhealthy anxiety in our lives. Are you dealing with any of these things?
If you answered yes to any of the above symptoms, then you may be dealing with a form of anxiety.
Anxiety can present itself in our lives in a variety of ways. Some common types of anxiety include chronic stress (generalized anxiety disorder), panic attacks, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and phobias.
Do you feel as though your life is outside of your control? Do you find yourself worrying excessively about everyday things?
Chronic stress, or generalized anxiety disorder, occurs when one experiences intense levels of anxiety frequently. The worry and anxiety often involve realistic fears and worries, but it is escalated to an overwhelming and disproportionate level. These fears also span more than one area of life. For example, one may stress and worry excessively about family, friends, work, money, and health.
Physical signs of chronic stress include chest pain, headache, fatigue, tense muscles, stomachaches, and vomiting.
Do you experience a sudden onset of intense fear and worry that results in heart racing or palpitations? You may be experiencing a panic attack. These attacks are acute episodes of intense emotion that elicits a physical response.
Agoraphobia is a condition that may be found in those that experience panic attacks. This is the fear that a panic attack may occur, and often dissuades individuals from going out and enjoying life.
Do you avoid events, parties and social settings? Social anxiety is emotional discomfort within a group. Individuals with social anxiety often avoid social situations in fear of being judged, embarrassed, or entering into unknown situations.
Have you experienced a traumatic or life-threatening occurrence? Flashbacks, nightmares, and overall fear can present in individuals suffering from PTSD.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) presents as an emotional conflict to resolve obsession (thoughts) through compulsion (action). Uncontrollable and intrusive thoughts provoke the individual to take a specific action to alleviate the stressor and reduce anxiety. This can feel ritualistic or religious in nature, as the individual feels as though the compulsion must occur (and oftentimes in a certain way) in order for the anxiety to dissipate.
Phobias are reactions to unrealistic and exaggerated fears. Individuals suffering from phobias often realize, outside of their instance of fear, that their phobia is unrealistic. However, they are unable to control their response and reaction when the fear directly impacts their daily life.
If you or a loved one struggles with anxiety, it is important to not only treat the symptoms of your anxious thoughts, but to get to the root cause of your anxiety. Anxiety presents differently for each individual, as signs and symptoms are not identical from person to person.
